During my internship at Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY, I passed this site every morning. It reminded me of (imagined) kidnapping and (murdered body) dump sites from television shows and movies in my childhood. This water-filled mine area ran along the old rail lines. Now defunct, it had become a walking trail. It was littered with beer cans, candy wrappers, and discarded clothing. I found an insulated doghouse floating there the morning I began my installation.
I printed the faces of all reported missing persons in the state of New York for the year 1999. I filled the bags with air and floated them on the surface of the water as a silent memorial.
